Know how to build a newsletter for a blog is not just about choosing an email-sending tool. You need to determine what goals the newsletter serves, what value readers will receive, and who is responsible for managing the subscriber list. A good system helps you maintain direct contact with readers instead of relying entirely on traffic from search engines or social media.

In this article, I will compare three common approaches: using WordPress, using Substack, and using an independent email platform. I will also cover costs, data ownership, automation capabilities, and ways to increase subscribers for a Vietnamese-language blog.

Three popular options for building a blog newsletter

WordPress: suitable when the blog is the center

With WordPress, you can integrate signup forms into posts, sidebars, landing pages, or behavior-triggered pop-ups. Emails are typically sent through a plugin connected to an external email service rather than directly from the hosting server. This reduces the risk of emails being marked as spam and makes it easier to scale as the list grows.

The greatest advantage is control over the experience. You can design forms to match your brand identity, create multiple types of signup content, and link the newsletter to new posts. If your blog already receives steady traffic, this is a natural choice for a blogger newsletter.

The point to note is that WordPress requires you to manage many components yourself: plugins, forms, SMTP connections or email-sending platforms, spam prevention, and security. You also need to check regularly whether forms are working, emails are reaching inboxes, and data is being synchronized accurately.

Substack: quick to launch, with little technical maintenance

Substack combines a publishing site, an email list, and newsletter-sending tools in one system. You can create a publication, publish posts, and send copies to subscribers without installing plugins or configuring a server. This is a significant advantage for people who want to focus on writing.

Substack also supports both free and paid models, making it suitable for authors with in-depth content or their own communities. However, you should consider how dependent you want to be on a third-party platform, the extent of interface customization, and the fee structure if you later introduce paid content.

When considering Substack or WordPress, I usually recommend looking at your operational priorities. If getting started quickly matters more than detailed control, Substack may be a good fit. If the newsletter is part of a long-term blog, product, or brand ecosystem, WordPress combined with an email service is usually more flexible.

Independent email platform: a balance between automation and control

Dedicated email platforms typically provide forms, audience segmentation, automated email sequences, performance reports, and subscription-status management. You can use them with WordPress, a website built on another platform, or a separate landing page.

The advantage is that the system is designed for email marketing from the outset. You can send welcome emails, categorize readers according to the topics they are interested in, and create nurture campaigns. The downside is that there is usually an additional cost and a learning curve. Some platforms also charge based on the number of contacts or emails sent, so you should read the pricing carefully before importing your entire list.

Comparing WordPress, Substack, and independent email platforms

The table below is a practical evaluation framework, not an absolute ranking. The right choice depends on your scale, skills, and business goals.

  • Speed of getting started: Substack is usually the fastest; independent email platforms come next; WordPress requires more integration steps.
  • Brand control: WordPress and independent email platforms are generally more flexible than Substack.
  • Automation: independent email platforms are usually the strongest; WordPress depends on the connected service; Substack is better suited to simple publishing workflows.
  • Content management: WordPress is convenient when the newsletter drives readers to an article library; Substack is convenient when emails and articles are a unified product.
  • Monetization potential: Substack has built-in support for paid subscriptions; WordPress and independent email platforms offer more options but usually require you to build your own payment, membership, or product-selling process.
  • Technical operations: Substack requires the least maintenance; WordPress requires upkeep; independent email platforms require separate configuration and monitoring.

Do not compare only the starting price. Also consider management time, data-export capabilities, flexibility when switching platforms, and costs that increase with subscriber count. A cheap service that makes segmentation or data migration difficult may not save money in the long run.

How to implement email marketing for a blog and increase subscribers

Start with a clear content promise

Readers need to know what they will receive after subscribing. Instead of writing “Subscribe for updates,” describe it specifically: a weekly summary of new posts, practical guides, tool lists, or in-depth analysis. The clearer the promise, the better the quality of your subscribers.

You should also choose a frequency you can maintain. One useful newsletter each week is usually more reliable than a heavy but inconsistent sending schedule. If you are unsure, start with two or four emails per month.

Design signup points within the reading journey

Place forms where they make contextual sense: at the end of posts, within long content, on the About page, and on resource pages. A signup invitation directly related to the topic of the post is usually more persuasive than a generic form.

You can offer a lead magnet such as a checklist, planning template, or in-depth summary. However, do not use an unrelated gift simply to attract volume. Subscribers who are not interested in your main topic will reduce engagement quality later.

Build a welcome email sequence

The first email should confirm the subscription and deliver exactly what you promised. Subsequent emails can introduce important articles, explain the blog’s perspective, and ask readers what issues they are interested in. This sequence helps new subscribers understand the newsletter’s value before you send regular editions.

On every platform, use honest subject lines, a consistent sender name, and an easy-to-find unsubscribe link. Send emails only to people who have consented to receive them, retain proof of consent when necessary, and respect requests to stop receiving emails.

Measure to improve, not to chase a single metric

Track new subscriptions, bounce rate, unsubscribe rate, and link clicks. Open rates can be affected by how email applications process data, so you should not use this metric alone to determine whether a campaign was successful.

Each month, you can test one small change: the subject line, call to action, form placement, or newsletter topic. Record your hypothesis and results to learn what actually helps increase subscribers and generate quality traffic.

For SEO, a newsletter does not replace public content. Continue publishing articles that can be found on Google, then use email to bring readers back to relevant content. You can also refer to the article Optimizing a Blog for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode to build a more sustainable content strategy.

Conclusion: Substack is suitable for getting started quickly and reducing technical work. WordPress is suitable when the blog, brand, and public content are central. An independent email platform is suitable when you need segmentation, automation, and scalability. If you are unsure, start with a simple process, publish consistently, and upgrade only when actual needs arise.
