Heat Acclimatization: Increase Gradually—Don’t Use It to Justify Pushing Through the Heat
Heat acclimatization is the process by which the body gradually adjusts after repeated, controlled exposure to heat. Possible changes include a lower heart rate at the same exercise intensity and improved sweating and heat dissipation. Research reviews indicate that these changes generally require repeated exposure over multiple days; the degree of acclimatization depends on intensity, duration, WBGT and exposure time—not simply on having “gotten used to summer” (according to pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
Beginners can follow these safety principles:
- Start with easy runs that are shorter than usual in moderately hot conditions.
- Increase only one variable at a time: either add duration or increase speed; do not increase both in the same week.
- Keep at least one easy or rest day if you have slept poorly, have a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or lingering fatigue from the previous session.
- After several days without heat exposure, do not assume that your heat tolerance remains unchanged.
Heat acclimatization can reduce physiological strain under the same conditions, but it does not eliminate the risk of heat illness. Even a physically fit person can overheat when running too fast, becoming dehydrated, sleeping poorly, or encountering unusually hot and humid conditions.
When to stop: distinguishing normal exercise fatigue from heat illness
