If you want to moderate Blogger comments without making it difficult for genuine readers to submit feedback, you should not disable comments immediately. The most balanced configuration is usually to allow users with Google Accounts to comment, enable manual moderation for older posts, turn on Blogger CAPTCHA when spam increases, and check the spam folder regularly. This approach reduces automated comments while preserving a channel for genuine readers to engage.

In Blogger, you can choose among three groups of people who may comment: anyone, users with a Google Account, or blog members only. You can also set moderation to always, sometimes, or never. Menu names may vary slightly by interface, but these options are all located under Settings > Comments in Blogger, according to Google Blogger Help.

Configure Blogger comment moderation based on spam levels

Before making changes, identify the blog’s main problem. If spam appears only occasionally on new posts, simply enable moderation and manage it in the Comments section. If spam is concentrated on older posts or comes from anonymous comments, combine commenter restrictions with CAPTCHA.

A balanced setting for most blogs

  1. Sign in to Blogger and select the blog you want to edit.
  2. Go to Settings, then scroll to the Commentssection.
  3. Under Who can comment?, select Users with Google Accounts.
  4. Under Comment moderation, select Always if the blog is experiencing heavy spam.
  5. Enter the email address for moderation notifications, then click Save.

This option is suitable for professional blogs, small business blogs, or websites already receiving significant amounts of spam. Readers can still comment using a Google Account, but new comments will not appear publicly until you approve them.

A setting that creates less friction for readers

If the blog has substantial natural discussion and spam is concentrated in older content, choose the Sometimes moderation mode and set the age threshold for posts that have been published longer than a specified period. According to Google’s guidance, this mode sends comments on older posts to the moderation queue, while comments on newer posts may be displayed more quickly (according to Google Blogger Help).

This is often a good balance for news blogs, tutorial blogs, or personal blogs that want to encourage discussion. Do not choose too short a threshold if readers often return to comment several days later.

Block Blogger comment spam without shutting out readers

Blocking Blogger comment spam does not necessarily mean banning everyone who is not signed in. Each option affects the response rate and the amount of administrative work differently.

SettingSpam-reduction potentialImpact on readersBest used when
Anyone, including anonymous usersLowEasiest commenting experienceThe blog is small and receives very little spam
Users with Google AccountsMedium to highSign-in requiredYou want to reduce spam while keeping comments open
Blog members onlyHighStrongly restrict new usersPrivate blog or closed community
Always moderateHigh if handled consistentlyComments do not appear immediatelySpam is increasing rapidly or the topic is sensitive
CAPTCHAAn additional layer of bot filteringAdds a verification stepAutomated, high-volume submissions

For a public blog, I recommend starting with Users with a Google Account and Always moderate. After about one to two weeks, review the number of legitimate comments and spam comments to decide whether to relax the setting to “Sometimes.”

If the blog is building a personal brand, the comments section also affects perceptions of credibility. You may also want to consult how to create an author page for a blog to align the comments section with author information and the website’s trust signals.

How to enable Blogger CAPTCHA correctly

In the Comments section, the option may be labeled differently depending on the interface version, such as Verification from, CAPTCHA or Reader comment captcha. When enabled, commenters may have to complete a verification step before posting. Google also notes that some commenters may still be asked to enter a code even when this option is disabled (according to Google Blogger Help).

CAPTCHA is useful for reducing bot activity, but it does not address every type of spam. Manual spammers, disguised advertising, or comments containing irrelevant links may still get through the verification step. Therefore, you should not enable CAPTCHA and then ignore the moderation queue.

  1. Go to Settings > Comments.
  2. Find the commenter verification or CAPTCHA option.
  3. Enable the option and save your changes.
  4. Open a post in an incognito window or use another browser to test the comment form.
  5. Confirm that genuine readers can still see the comment field and submit feedback.

If readers report that they cannot submit comments, check the browser, ad-blocking extensions, third-party cookies, and any CAPTCHA loading errors. Blogger Help documentation states that third-party cookies may affect commenting with a Google Account (according to Google Blogger Help).

Comment moderation and spam-handling workflow

Enabling moderation is effective only when you have a consistent handling process. Blogger allows administrators to review pending comments and then choose to publish, delete, or mark them as spam. Comments marked as spam are moved to the Spam folder (according to Google Blogger Help).

  1. Open Comments in the Blogger admin panel.
  2. Select the Awaiting moderationfilter.
  3. Read the entire comment, rather than judging it solely by the sender’s name.
  4. Select Publish if the comment is relevant and valuable.
  5. Select Delete if the content is inappropriate but shows no signs of bulk submission.
  6. Select Spam if the comment is promotional, repetitive, contains suspicious links, or is unrelated to the post.

To avoid deleting genuine readers’ comments by mistake, keep comments that contain specific questions, relevant experiences, or verifiable feedback. A brief comment is not automatically spam. Conversely, a lengthy comment that contains numerous keywords, purchase invitations, or irrelevant links still requires careful review.

If you manage multiple blogs, set aside a specific time each day or several times a week to process the moderation queue. You can also post a brief notice below the form, such as: “Comments are moderated to remove advertising and irrelevant links; valid questions will receive a prompt response.”

To optimize your blog for greater transparency with readers and search systems, you can review how to use privacy-respecting first-party data. If you need more practical resources, the Blogger Guides section and the Blogger tag are suitable places to find related articles.

Configuration checklist for keeping readers access open

  • Select Users with Google accounts rather than blog members only if the blog still needs to accept new readers.
  • Use Always for comment moderation when spam increases sharply; switch to “Sometimes” after the situation stabilizes.
  • Enable CAPTCHA when there are signs of bot activity, but do not treat it as the only layer of protection.
  • Check the Spam folder and restore valid comments using the Not spamoption.
  • Submit a comment in an incognito window to make sure readers can still complete the process.
  • Do not set the option to “Only members of this blog” for a public blog if your goal is to encourage discussion.

For most public blogs, the most suitable configuration is to allow users with Google accounts, moderate comments on older posts, enable CAPTCHA when needed, and check the moderation queue regularly. This approach reduces spam in a controlled way without turning the comment area into a closed door for genuine readers.
