If you are looking for a way to set up a Yandex site region, do not choose a country or city at random. First, determine whether the website actually serves a specific area or simply provides general content for readers in many places.
By the end of this article, you will be able to:
- Distinguish a general-information website from a website serving a local area.
- Check the region Yandex currently recognizes for the correct website property.
- Know what evidence to prepare if you request a region change.
- Compare the title, description, address, and favicon when the website appears in search results.
The running example is SaibABC.Com, an illustrative WordPress website from the series. This is not evidence that the website has been connected, assigned a region, or received actual display data in Yandex.
When does a website need a Yandex site region?
A region matters most for location-dependent queries, such as searches for a nearby store, service, office, or delivery provider. Yandex states that an assigned region may be taken into account when displaying results for these types of queries; assigning one region does not automatically exclude a website from other regions if its content remains relevant (according to yandex.com).
| Website type | Should a region be assigned? | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| A blog, magazine, or knowledge website with general content | Usually not necessary | Do not choose a region simply because the administrator is located in a particular country or because the website uses Yandex. |
| A news website or content focused on one province or city | May be necessary | Check whether the content, contact address, and service area are genuinely focused on that region. |
| A restaurant, clinic, salon, repair business, or local service | Usually worth considering | Choose a region that matches the actual address and service area. |
| A store delivering to multiple provinces or countries | The coverage area must be considered | Do not choose the city where the business is headquartered if the website actually serves a wider area without supporting information. |
| A business with multiple offices | The website structure must be checked | Display the full address, telephone number, and relevant content for each location; if subdomains are used, each region should have its own content. |
Safety rule: if your website provides general information, prioritize leaving it without a region rather than choosing an unsupported one. For SaibABC.Com, no project data currently shows that the website needs to be assigned Russia, Vietnam, or a specific city.
Prepare before checking
You need permission to view the website in Yandex Webmaster and must identify the correct website property being checked. If you have not yet added the website or verified access, keep the following placeholders in your log instead of creating URLs yourself:
[URL chính thức của website][URL trang liên hệ hoặc thông tin địa chỉ][URL bài viết công khai]
Before opening the report, record:
- Whether the website uses
httporhttps. - Whether the domain has the prefix
wwwor not. - Whether the website has one specific address, multiple addresses, or does not publish an address.
- The actual service area: one region, multiple regions, or global.
- Which pages on the website contain contact information, addresses, telephone numbers, or delivery areas.
This information helps you avoid checking the wrong version of the website. For example, https://example.com and https://www.example.com may be treated as different addresses in the management process. For SaibABC.Com, replace the placeholders with the actual URL only after checking the final address in a browser.
Check the region Yandex currently recognizes
- Open Yandex Webmaster and select the correct website. Compare the domain, protocol, and prefix
wwwwith the official URL recorded in your log. - Open the search-display section. In the English interface, Yandex documentation describes the path as Display in the search → Site region. Menu names may differ when you use another interface language or version.
- Record the current status. This may be a specific region, an unassigned-region status, or a status indicating that the website does not need geographic targeting.
- Compare it with the actual content. If Yandex displays a city but the website has no address, services or content related to that city, do not immediately conclude that the system is malfunctioning. Record the status and check the relevant information sources.
This step only shows that Yandex is storing or displaying regional information for the property you selected. It does not prove that the website will always rank highly, nor does it mean that the website will appear for every query from that region.
Decide whether to keep, change or leave the region unassigned
Use the table below to decide what to do before making changes:
| Question | If “Yes” | If “No” |
|---|---|---|
| Does the website offer services or products associated with a specific location? | Continue checking the address and service area. | Leans toward leaving the region unassigned. |
| Is that address or region clearly shown on the website? | You can prepare a change request if the current region is incorrect. | Do not request a change yet; add or verify the information first. |
| Does the website serve more areas than the currently selected region? | Check whether there is enough information to substantiate the broader service area. | You can keep the current region if it is appropriate. |
| Does the website publish only general content rather than serving a local area? | There is no need to assign a region solely to “optimize SEO.” | Review the website type and service area. |
If you request a regional change
In Yandex Webmaster, under Display in the search → Site region, select the edit icon, enter the region name, and choose the appropriate result. Yandex requires you to provide a link to a contact-information page so that a reviewer can compare the region with the website’s content. After submission, the request may be reviewed within a few days to several weeks; Yandex documentation also states that the change may take effect within two weeks after the review process is complete, so you should not promise a fixed timeframe for every website.
Before saving, record the following:
- Previous region.
- Proposed new region.
- URL of the contact page submitted to Yandex.
- Submission date and the status displayed after submission.
If the request is rejected, do not repeatedly try different regions. Read the reason, compare the address and service area again, and then choose a region with stronger supporting evidence.
If the website does not need a region
Select the equivalent of No region only when the website’s content and operating model genuinely do not depend on a specific geographic area. This does not “remove” the website from local search results, nor does it guarantee that Yandex will disregard all other geographic signals.
Check the title, description and favicon in search results

After checking the region, see how the website is displayed. In Yandex Webmaster, open the section equivalent to View in search results or use a relevant query on Yandex Search if the website already has data. Not every website will have a complete preview immediately.
A search result may include a title, description, favicon, website address and other information. However, Yandex does not always use the content exactly as you provided it: the title and description may be generated from the page content, the title tag title, the meta description tag and signals related to the query (according to yandex.com).
| Element | What to compare | If it does not match |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Does it accurately describe the page content, brand and main topic? | Check the title tag title, the header content and any duplicate headings. |
| Description | Does it accurately reflect what users will see after clicking? | Check the meta description tag description and the main text; do not stuff it with keywords. |
| Address | Does it use the correct protocol, domain and www version? | Compare it with the official URL; do not change DNS merely because a snippet is displayed differently. |
| Favicon | Is it the website’s correct icon rather than the hosting provider’s default icon? | Check that the favicon file is publicly accessible, returns HTTP 200, and is not blocked by robots.txt. |
| Local information | Do the address, phone number, or service area match the website? | Check the contact page and business data sources; do not use a single search-result screenshot as the only evidence. |
The title and description are important data sources, but they are not a fixed display guarantee. Yandex may select different text to better match the query. Therefore, check several relevant queries and record the date of each check rather than drawing a conclusion from a single search.
How to check the favicon
The favicon must be accessible through a direct link, typically return HTTP 200, not be blocked by robots.txt, and be correctly declared in the <head>. After the bot downloads the file, the icon may appear in search results after some time; Yandex states that this can take about two weeks in its official guidance, but this is not a guarantee for every website (according to yandex.com).
If you have just changed the favicon, record the old file, the new file URL, and the date of the change. Do not immediately delete the old file or code before confirming how the theme or WordPress is using that favicon.
Checklist for cross-checking displayed information
Copy this table into your website log and enter only data that you have actually verified:
| Item | Actual result | Evidence | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official URL | [URL chính thức của website] | Final address in the browser | Checked / Not confirmed |
| Yandex-recognized site region | [Khu vực hoặc No region] | Screenshot or notes from Site region | Consistent / Needs review |
| Contact page | [URL trang liên hệ] | Address, phone number, service area | Complete / Missing |
| Title | [Tiêu đề quan sát được] | View in search results or search results | Correct / Needs checking |
| Description | [Mô tả quan sát được] | Query and check date | Correct / Yandex selected different text |
| Favicon | [Có / Không / Chưa có dữ liệu] | Search results and favicon file URL | Checked / Not determined |
Misconceptions to avoid
- “If you use Yandex, you have to assign Russia as the region.” That is incorrect. The region must be based on the website’s actual content, address, and service area.
- “Assigning a region will make the website rank higher.” There is no such guarantee. Region is only one signal for location-dependent queries.
- “The title in the title tag is definitely the displayed title.” Not necessarily. Yandex may generate a different title based on the content and the query.
- “If the snippet does not match the meta description, the website must be broken.” There is not enough evidence to conclude that. Check the page content, the query, and the data Yandex is using.
- “If the favicon appears in the browser, it must have appeared on Yandex.” Not always. The bot must access and process the file before the icon is updated in the results.
- “If Yandex knows about the website, it has already been indexed.” These are different statuses. If you need to check a specific article, use the method for checking whether an article has been indexed by Yandex.
Practical exercise
Choose a website that you actually manage and answer these four questions:
- Does the website serve one specific locality, multiple localities, or no particular geographic area?
- What Yandex region is currently displayed?
- Is the address or service-area information on the website sufficient to explain that region?
- Do the title, description, and favicon in the search results accurately reflect the actual content?
If you do not have data for any question, write “no data” instead of guessing. The exercise is complete when someone else can read the log and determine which website you checked, on what date, using what evidence, and what the next step is.
Conclusion and next steps
General informational websites usually do not need a site region. Websites that provide services, products, or local content should compare the selected region with their address, service area, and publicly available information on the site. If you request a change, prepare a contact page for Yandex to review and wait for the outcome rather than changing the region repeatedly.
After completing the checklist, you will be able to distinguish among three separate things: the region recognized for the website, how the search snippet is displayed, and the indexing status of each URL. These are different layers of information and should not be combined into a conclusion about rankings or traffic.
As a next step, you can use the regional data and sample URLs you recorded to review impressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and position in Yandex Webmaster. When you move on to that article, take this inspection log with you instead of creating fabricated data.
