If you already use Yandex Webmaster but are unsure whether you also need Yandex Metrica, start with the question you want to answer:

  • Is Yandex accessing, processing, and displaying the website? Use Yandex Webmaster.
  • What do users do after clicking through to the website? Use Yandex Metrica or another behavioral analytics tool.

You are not required to use both. Metrica is not required to verify a website, submit a sitemap, or monitor indexing. The two tools complement each other only when you want to connect the sequence of search visibility → website click → on-site action.

By the end of this article, you will be able to choose one of three options: use Webmaster alone, keep your existing analytics tool, or add Metrica. If you choose Metrica, you will also have a minimal process for deploying a tag and checking whether it is receiving data.

Illustration guidance: if you create the illustration with AI, use a conceptual diagram showing “website → search results → visits → actions.” Do not use AI-generated images that pretend to show the Yandex, WordPress, or DNS interfaces. During editing, you may add genuine interface screenshots obtained lawfully; screenshots are not evidence of SaibABC.Com’s actual status.

The two tools answer two different groups of questions

QuestionSuitable toolData you can view
Can Yandex access the website?Yandex WebmasterCrawlability, server responses, and technical warnings.
Is the URL known to Yandex or included in search results?Yandex WebmasterURL status, indexing status, and exclusion reasons when the report contains data.
For which queries does the website appear?Yandex WebmasterImpressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), position, and query- or URL-level data where supported.
Where do users come from, and what do they do after visiting?Yandex MetricaVisits, traffic sources, pages viewed, goals, events, and behavioral reports.
Do users submit a form or complete a goal?Metrica or another analytics toolConversions and the user journey after visitors reach the website.

Example using SaibABC.Com: suppose that, over a given period, Webmaster shows an article 1,000 times and records 40 clicks. This is only an example, not actual data from SaibABC.Com. Forty clicks do not show whether users continued reading, opened additional pages, or submitted a form. Questions about what happens after the click fall within the scope of Metrica or another behavioral analytics tool.

Conversely, Metrica may record a visit from Yandex, but it does not replace Webmaster for checking whether a URL is known to the search engine, crawled, or included in search results.

When Is Yandex Webmaster Alone Enough?

Webmaster alone is sufficient if your current focus is the search platform and you do not yet need in-depth user-behavior analysis. This is a reasonable choice when:

  • The website is new, and you are adding it, verifying ownership, checking the sitemap, or reviewing robots.txt.
  • You want to know whether Yandex can access your public URLs.
  • You only need to monitor impressions, clicks, and queries on Yandex.
  • The website does not yet have clearly defined measurement goals, such as form submissions, registrations, or purchases.
  • You already use another analytics tool, and its current data meets your needs.

Installing Metrica just to “complete the set” can increase the number of tracking tags, access permissions, and privacy-notice maintenance responsibilities without producing a new decision.

If you need to check a specific URL, use a verified public article rather than inferring its status from the fact that the website has been added to Webmaster. You can also see how to check an article’s indexing status.

When Should You Use Both Webmaster and Metrica?

Use both when you need a continuous answer to two questions: Is the website receiving opportunities for traffic from Yandex? and What do users do after they arrive?

ScenarioWhat Webmaster tells youWhat Metrica adds
Many impressions but few clicksQueries, URLs, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. It does not directly explain the reasons behind performance in search results; it only shows the quality of the session after the user has entered the website.
There are clicks, but few users complete the goalThe website receives traffic from Yandex.Landing pages, navigation paths, events, forms, or goals that users abandon.
Optimizing content for queriesQueries and pages receiving impressions or clicks.Whether users continue reading, view more content, or return.
An e-commerce or lead-generation websiteOpportunities to receive traffic from Yandex Search. The steps leading to sign-ups, inquiries, product additions, or purchases, if configured correctly.

These tools complement rather than replace each other. Their data may not match because they record different stages and under different conditions. Webmaster focuses on how the website appears in Yandex Search; Metrica starts measuring when the tracking code runs on the page.

What if you already have Google Analytics or another tool?

You do not necessarily need to install Metrica. If your current tool already measures the sessions, traffic sources, events, and conversions you need, you can continue using it alongside Yandex Webmaster.

Consider Metrica when you have a specific reason, such as:

  • You want to analyze separately the traffic and behavior of users coming from the Yandex ecosystem.
  • Your current reports lack a feature or analytical approach you need.
  • You want to use Metrica's click maps, scroll maps, or form analytics.
  • The management team has agreed that Metrica will serve as an additional data source in the website optimization process.

Do not install multiple tools merely to compare their figures and then conclude that one tool is “right” and the other is “wrong.” Differences can result from session definitions, filters, recording times, tracking blockers, user consent, or the code not running on every page.

If you choose Metrica, start with a minimal implementation

The workflow below is for a live WordPress website. You need a Yandex ID, website management access, and a method for inserting code on the pages you want to measure. This article does not require an additional server, PHP, database, or specific plugin.

1. Create a tag for the correct website

Where to do this: Yandex Metrica.

Create a new tag, give it a recognizable name, and enter the website's primary domain. According to Yandex documentation, the Site URL field should contain the domain name without the protocol prefix http:// or https://. Select a time zone that matches how your team prepares reports (according to yandex.com).

For SaibABC.Com, do not guess whether to use the version with or without www. Compare the final address shown when you open the website with the official URL verified in the series log.

Expected result: The tag is created for the correct website, and you have tag code ready to copy. If the official URL has not been finalized, stop at this step; do not create multiple tags for different domain versions just to test them.

2. Enable only the features that serve your objective

If you only need visits, traffic sources, and goals, start with the basic tag code. Session Replay, scroll maps, and form analytics are additional features; they may record or display more information about a session, so their purpose, collected data, and user notices should be assessed separately.

This article does not require session recording to be enabled. If you need it later, review the applicable terms of use, masked or excluded data, retention period, and legal requirements before enabling it.

3. Insert one tag code on the pages you want to measure

Where to do this: Yandex Metrica to copy the code; WordPress or the website's tag-management system to insert it.

Yandex's getting-started documentation instructs you to copy the code from the tag settings and insert it into the HTML of the relevant pages, as close to the top of the page as possible. In WordPress, the actual location depends on the theme, plugin, or tag-management system in use. Choose one method and record where you inserted it; do not paste the same tag into the theme, a plugin, and the tag-management system at the same time (according to yandex.com).

Before saving, record the previous configuration or create a backup according to your website-management procedures. If the figures increase unusually, first check whether the code has been inserted more than once.

Expected result: The code appears on the pages within the measurement scope, only once per page. If you do not know where the code is being inserted, ask the WordPress administrator instead of adding another copy.

4. Check that the tag is receiving data

Where to do this: Yandex Metrica and a browser in a logged-out state.

  1. Open Yandex Metrica, select the tag, and go to the tag-checking area.
  2. Enter a real public URL, such as [URL bài viết công khai]. Replace this symbol with the verified URL; do not turn it into a guessed path for SaibABC.Com.
  3. Open the URL in a private window or a browser where you are not logged in.
  4. Check whether the tag is detected and whether the report records visits.

Yandex identifies several common reasons a tag is not detected: the code is not present on the page, loads slowly, is blocked by an ad blocker or firewall, or loads only after a specific action. If the check fails, do not install a second tag immediately; inspect the publicly accessible source code, check the cache, and confirm that the code appears only once (according to yandex.com).

Success criteria: The tag is detected on the public URL and the report contains corresponding data after the check. Record the URL, check date, code placement and result in a log. If a tracking blocker makes the check unreliable, try a browser that does not block tracking and record the conditions under which you performed the check.

Should you link Metrica to Webmaster?

Should you link Metrica to Webmaster?

This is an optional choice, not a requirement for using Webmaster or Metrica. According to Yandex documentation, you can link a Metrica tag to a website verified in Webmaster and then enable the option allowing robots to crawl pages containing the tag. This process requires the appropriate permissions in both services and confirmation from the website manager in Webmaster (according to yandex.com).

Consider linking them only when:

  • The website has been verified at the correct address in Webmaster.
  • The Metrica tag is installed on the public pages that you want robots to discover.
  • You understand that this is one way to help robots discover URLs, not an indexing command, and it does not guarantee that a URL will appear in search results.
  • The website still has a sitemap and a reasonable crawling configuration.

Do not use the Metrica–Webmaster link as a substitute for a sitemap, to fix robots.txt errors, address noindex, or verify a URL's status.

Check privacy requirements before collecting data

Metrica is more than a dashboard of figures. The tag may collect information about visits, devices, operating systems, cookies and activity on the website; Yandex requires website operators to describe the relevant information processing in their privacy policy (according to yandex.com).

  • Does the privacy policy already describe the analytics tool and the relevant data types?
  • Is the website subject to laws that require notice or consent before cookies are placed?
  • Who can view the reports, and who can edit the tag?
  • Could form fields, page titles or event data contain personal information?
  • Is it genuinely necessary to enable Session Replay, scroll maps or form analytics?

Do not send passwords, private content or personally identifiable information in custom parameters merely to make reports more detailed. If you are unsure what data is being sent, stop the advanced configuration and consult the website's legal or security lead.

Decision checklist

  • You only need to know whether Yandex is crawling and displaying the website: use Webmaster.
  • You need to know what users do after clicking: use Metrica or your existing analytics tool.
  • You already have another analytics tool and its data meets your goals: you do not need to install Metrica yet.
  • You want to analyze Yandex traffic separately or use Metrica reports: consider using both.
  • The website has forms or e-commerce: define the events and data-processing responsibilities before enabling measurement.
  • You do not know where the code will be placed: stop and ask the administrator; do not paste the code into multiple locations as a test.

Practical exercise

Complete the table below for SaibABC.Com or a website you manage. SaibABC.Com is provided only as illustrative context; do not enter its actual status unless you have checked it.

QuestionAnswer to record
Do you need to know how the website appears on Yandex?Yes/No and the Webmaster report to review.
Do you need to know what users do after clicking?Yes/No and the goals or events to measure.
Which analytics tools are already in use?Tool name, data already available and remaining gaps.
If you install Metrica, where will the code be placed?Theme, plugin, tag-management system or person responsible.
What is the verification evidence?Tag detected, data displayed, URL and check date.

The exercise is complete when you choose one of three conclusions: use Webmaster only, use Webmaster together with your existing analytics tool or add Metrica. Do not choose “both” unless you can state the question that Metrica will answer.

Conclusion and next steps

Yandex Webmaster helps you understand how your website appears and is handled in Yandex Search. Yandex Metrica helps you analyze user behavior after visitors reach your website. Using both makes sense when you need to connect search data with real on-site actions; Metrica is not required to verify a website, submit a sitemap, or monitor indexing.

If you have chosen Metrica, confirm these three pieces of evidence before moving on to advanced reporting: the tag has been inserted only once, a public URL receives the tag, and the report has started receiving data. If you do not yet have all three, fix the implementation before analyzing trends.

In the next step of the series, you will review the entire setup and create a schedule for regular monitoring, rather than treating Webmaster and Metrica as tools that must be opened together every day. Yandex Webmaster Checklist: Validate Setup and Track the First 30 Days
