What Is SEO? SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a set of activities that helps search engines crawl, understand and display website content that matches users’ needs. SEO does not guarantee that a page will rank first; the practical goal is to improve its discoverability, relevance and the experience users have after they visit.

For beginners, follow this workflow: understand searchers → choose a topic → create an outline → write useful content → optimize the page → check accessibility and indexability → measure results and improve. There is no automatic trick for moving a website to the top of search results; the focus is on useful, readable, original content that is updated when necessary (according to Google Search Central).

This article is intended for people who can edit a website or are preparing to publish an article. It does not cover server deployment, link buying or large-scale enterprise SEO strategy.

What Are the Main Areas of SEO?

SEO is commonly divided into three groups. The boundaries between them may vary by source, but the following breakdown is clear enough for getting started.

  • Content SEO: researching search needs, choosing topics, writing articles, answering questions accurately and providing valuable information.
  • On-page SEO: optimizing titles, subheadings, introductions, URLs, internal links, images and other elements displayed on the page.
  • Technical SEO: helping search engines access and understand a website through its link structure, mobile usability, HTTPS, sitemaps and indexing directives.

Off-page SEO, such as mentions or links from other websites, also exists, but it should not be your starting point. First, create a useful, accessible page with a clear subject.

What Is Content SEO, and How Does It Differ from Ordinary Article Writing?

Content SEO is the practice of planning and producing content based on search needs while optimizing it so that both readers and search engines understand what problem the page addresses.

A good SEO article does more than contain keywords. It should match search intent, use an easy-to-scan structure, include specific examples, state limitations when necessary and guide readers to the next step. Content should be created for people first rather than mass-producing articles solely to attract traffic (according to Google Search Central).

How to Create Content SEO from Scratch

1. Define the Reader and the Article’s Task

Before researching keywords, write one sentence describing the task:

“After reading this article, what will a beginner be able to do that they could not do before?”

For example, for the topic “how to install HTTPS on a website,” the task might be: “A beginner will know how to check a certificate, enable HTTPS and handle redirects from HTTP to HTTPS.” This helps you avoid writing an overly broad article about web security that does not lead readers to a specific outcome.

2. Find Topics and Keywords Based on Search Intent

A keyword is a phrase that users enter into a search engine. Search intent is the goal behind that phrase. Four common categories are:

  • Informational: “what is SEO,” “what does HTTPS do.”
  • How-to: “how to write an SEO article,” “how to create a sitemap.”
  • Comparison or evaluation: “WordPress or Wix for a blog.”
  • Transactional: “buy SEO software,” “SEO content writing service.”

Do not choose keywords solely because they have high search volume. A high-volume keyword that does not fit your product, expertise or website goals may generate traffic without generating useful action.

Create a table in a spreadsheet or content management tool with the following columns:

TopicWhat does the reader want to do?Suitable page typeNext action
What is SEOUnderstand the conceptExplanatory articleRead a beginner’s guide
How to Create SEO ContentWrite an article yourselfTutorialApply the outline or use the checklist
SEO content servicesFind a providerService pageSubmit a consultation request

Each URL should have one primary topic. If a page explains SEO, sells services, and teaches readers how to install WordPress, readers may not know what to do next, and the page will lack focus.

3. Examine the Pages Currently Appearing in Search Results

Search for the target keyword and examine the results: are they explanatory articles, tool lists, step-by-step guides, product pages, or videos? This signals the format users may expect; it is not an instruction to copy those pages.

You do not need to copy existing pages. Look for gaps you can fill:

  • Explain terms that other articles use without defining.
  • Add clear input and output examples.
  • Identify common errors and explain how to check for them.
  • Update the process when a tool or interface has changed.
  • Narrow the topic to serve a more specific group of readers.

4. Create an Outline Before Writing

A basic outline should include:

  1. A brief answer to the main question.
  2. Explanations of important terms.
  3. The steps or criteria readers need to apply.
  4. A specific example.
  5. Common errors and how to check for them.
  6. The next step after finishing the article.

For an article about creating SEO content, the outline might cover identifying the reader, choosing the search intent, structuring the article, writing the content, optimizing the page, publishing, monitoring, and updating it.

5. Write for Clarity and Practical Application

Put the key answer at the beginning instead of extending the introduction. Use short paragraphs, headings that accurately describe the content, and examples with clearly defined inputs. If you use a technical term, explain it the first time it appears.

For example, instead of writing “Optimize SEO comprehensively to improve rankings,” write: “In this section, you will check the page title, URL, internal links, and indexability.” The second version tells readers exactly what problem the article will address.

You do not need to repeat the keyword in every paragraph. When appropriate, use natural alternatives such as “search engine optimization,” “page optimization,” or “content that serves search needs.” Keyword stuffing makes sentences harder to read and may be considered manipulative behavior.

How to Optimize an SEO Article on Your Website

Page Titles and Display Headings

A title should accurately describe the content, distinguish the page from others, and help users decide whether to open it. Search engines may use the <title> element, the main heading, and other prominent signals on the page to generate the title link in search results; therefore, do not write a title for search engines while the content addresses a different topic (according to <title>), the Google Search Central guidance).

In your content management system, enter the page title in the Title or Page titlefield, then preview it if the system supports previews. For example:

  • Weak: SEO, content, website, best SEO guide.
  • Better: How to Create SEO Content: From Topic Selection to Measurement.

URLs, Subheadings, and the Opening Paragraph

  • URLs should be short, stable, and reflect the primary topic. If your system allows you to edit a URL, change it only before publishing or when you have a redirect plan.
  • Use one main heading for the page, with H2 and H3 headings to divide the sections within it.
  • The opening paragraph should answer the question quickly and state the article’s limitations.
  • Place the keyword or a natural variation in meaningful locations rather than inserting it mechanically.

After saving the draft, open the preview URL in a separate window. Check that the title matches the topic, the URL has not been truncated incorrectly, the links open properly, and the content displays correctly on a small screen.

Internal Links

Internal links help readers move to related content and help search engines discover other URLs. Anchor text should accurately describe the destination page—for example, “guide to reducing GIF file size in WordPress” rather than “click here.”

If the article includes a section on image performance optimization, you can direct readers to the guide to converting GIFs to video in WordPress when they need a specific technical example. If the website does not yet use HTTPS, separate the implementation instructions and refer readers to the guide to installing Let’s Encrypt on Vultr rather than putting all server-related procedures in a basic SEO article.

Before publishing, click each link in the preview to test it. If a destination page has changed its URL, update the link or set up a redirect on the website before publishing the article.

Images and supplementary content

Images should support understanding of the article, not replace important information available only in the image. Use meaningful filenames, write alt text that accurately describes the content, and compress images to an appropriate level. For charts or screenshots, add a text description so that people who cannot view the image can still understand the instructions.

What should you check for website SEO?

Website SEO is not just a matter of installing a plugin or entering a keyword. Check the following four areas.

Check areaPractical questionSigns that need attention
AccessibilityCan users and crawlers open the page?Server errors, broken links, or the page being unintentionally blocked
IndexingIs the page allowed to appear in search results?Incorrect noindex, canonical tag, page not yet discovered
StructureDoes the website have a clear topic structure and internal linking?Orphan pages, confusing menus, or multiple URLs with duplicate content
ExperienceIs the page easy to read and use on common devices?Text that is too small, ads covering the content, slow loading, or layout shifts

Start with issues that prevent users or search engines from accessing the content. Only then move on to advanced details such as structured data. Structured data may make a page eligible for certain special search features, but it does not guarantee high rankings or consistent appearance as a rich result.

For performance, you can check image sizes, render-blocking resources, unnecessary scripts, and the layout on mobile devices. Do not sacrifice readability or functionality just to achieve a particular score; the goal is a stable experience and accessible content.

Example: Creating an SEO Content Article

Example: Creating an SEO Content Article

This hypothetical example connects the steps into a process you can follow. The topic is “how to write SEO content for beginners”.

  1. Task: A beginner can write an article with a clear topic and knows how to check it before publishing.
  2. Intent: instructional, not a service sales page.
  3. Planned URL: /cach-viet-content-seo/. If you replace /duong-dan-cu/ with this URL after publication, set up a redirect from the old URL.
  4. Title: “How to Write SEO Content: A Process from Topic Selection to Measurement.”
  5. Outline: brief definition → identify search intent → create an outline → write → optimize the title, URL, links, and images → check indexing → measure results.
  6. Pre-publication checks: Open the preview URL on a computer and phone, click the links, check the forms or calls to action, and see whether the page has been marked noindex unintentionally.
  7. After publication: Use the website’s search management tool to submit or inspect the URL if the tool supports it; then monitor impressions, clicks, and queries rather than drawing conclusions from a single day.

If the checks show that the article has not been indexed, fix access issues or indexing directives before revising the wording. If the article receives impressions but few clicks, review the title and how well the opening aligns with searchers’ needs.

How to Measure and Improve SEO

SEO takes time while search engines crawl, process, and evaluate a page. Do not conclude that an article has failed simply because it has not received traffic immediately after publication.

  • Indexing status: Has the page been discovered and indexed?
  • Impressions: How many times has the page appeared for relevant queries?
  • Click-through rate: Do users choose the page when they see it?
  • Position or query groups: What needs are leading users to find the page?
  • Post-visit actions: Do readers continue reading, subscribe, submit an inquiry, or make a purchase?

If there are impressions but few clicks, review the title and description. If there are clicks but users leave quickly, check how well the promise in the search result matches the actual content. If there are no impressions, check indexing, internal links, the level of competition, and whether the page genuinely addresses a clear need.

Search management tools such as Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools help you check the data that search engines can see. The data may be incomplete or not updated in real time; review trends over time rather than reacting to a single day.

Common SEO mistakes beginners make

  • Writing for keywords instead of readers: the article contains the right phrases but does not solve the reader’s problem.
  • Combining too many search intents in one URL: the article is simultaneously a guide, a sales page and a tool list.
  • Copying or rewriting superficially: the content offers no examples, analysis or added value.
  • Buying links or generating them in bulk: this manipulates signals; it is not a foundation for sustainable SEO.
  • Accidentally blocking crawlers: robots.txt, noindex or configuring the server in a way that prevents the page from being processed.
  • Changing URLs arbitrarily: changing an address without setting up an appropriate redirect can cause the loss of existing links and signals.
  • Looking only at rankings: search position does not reveal the full picture of quality, conversion potential or alignment with the goal.

Google and Bing both recommend content that is clear, useful and original, and advise against practices such as keyword stuffing, copied content, artificial links or misleading structured data (see bing.com).

SEO checklist for a new article

  • Have you clearly defined the reader and the article’s task?
  • Does the keyword accurately reflect the search intent?
  • Do the title and opening paragraph answer the main question directly?
  • Does the outline proceed logically from prerequisites to the intended result?
  • Does the content include examples, limitations and troubleshooting guidance?
  • Do the URL, subheadings, images and internal links accurately describe the content?
  • Does the page work well on mobile devices and use HTTPS?
  • Are there no noindex, canonical or robots.txt rules configured incorrectly?
  • Have you checked for broken links, forms and call-to-action buttons?
  • Have you recorded the update date and a plan for reviewing the content again?

A practical starting point for beginners

Do not try to optimize the entire website at once. Choose a topic directly relevant to your readers, write one article that fully solves a single task, link it to related pages, check that it is accessible, and then monitor the data over time.

The safest order of priorities is: content that meets the reader’s needs → clear structure → accessibility and indexing → user experience → measurement and updates. When an article helps readers complete a task, subsequent technical optimizations have a clearer foundation.
