The short answer: you do not need to buy a domain to start a blog on Blogger. An address in the form tenblog.blogspot.com is suitable while you are still testing a topic, learning to publish or not yet ready to commit to an annual cost. A custom domain is more suitable when your blog name is reasonably settled, you need an easy-to-remember address and you are prepared to manage the registrar account, DNS, renewals and HTTPS yourself.

By the end of this article, you will be able to choose between the two options, have at least three names to consider, estimate registration and renewal costs, and know what to check before paying. SaibABC Blog is only a planned illustrative project; the article does not claim that the project already has an address, a domain, readers or real-world results.

How Do Blogspot Addresses and Custom Domains Differ?

Blogger is the platform used to create, manage and publish a blog. Blogspot typically appears in the default address provided by Blogger, for example tenblog.blogspot.com. A custom domain is an address you register through a provider, such as tenban.com.

Buying a domain does not mean that you must change platforms. You can continue writing and managing content in Blogger while readers access it through the custom domain. When connected, Blogger may use a subdomain such as www.tenban.com or blog.tenban.com; obtain the exact configuration steps and records to enter from your own Blogger interface rather than copying someone else’s records (according to support.google.com).

CriterionBlogspot addressCustom domain

ManagementPrimarily within BloggerAlso involves a registrar account and DNS

HTTPSManaged by Blogger for a Blogspot addressMust be checked after connection

A domain does not automatically generate readers, indexing or rankings. It primarily changes the address readers see and separates control of that address from the Blogger platform. Therefore, do not buy one simply because you assume a domain will automatically make your blog more professional in every respect.

Choose an Option Based on Your Blog’s Stage

Current situationMore suitable optionWhy
You are not sure about the topic or whether you can maintain the blogUse a Blogspot addressReduce your financial commitment and focus on testing your content workflow
You have a topic but a limited budgetStart with Blogspot and set aside money for a domain nameTake time to check names and compare renewal fees
Your brand is settled and you want to build for the long termBuy a custom domain and connect it to BloggerA more memorable address that you can manage separately from the platform

Use a Blogspot address first if you still need to answer questions such as whether the topic fits your available time, whether Blogger supports the type of website you want, whether the blog name is stable enough, and whether you are willing to pay renewal fees for several years. Not buying a domain yet does not prevent you from publishing posts, testing the design, or completing your content.

Consider buying a custom domain once you have settled on a topic, want a short address to share over the long term, can secure your registrar account, and accept the cost even if the blog has not generated revenue. A custom domain also does not remove Blogger’s limits on control over the platform, server, or source code.

If you need to review the difference between a platform and an address, you can read the article comparing Blogger and Blogspot. This article focuses only on the domain decision and associated costs.

How to choose a blog name and domain you can keep long term

Identify your readers before choosing a name

Write the following sentence before thinking about the domain extension:

“This blog helps [nhóm người đọc] achieve [kết quả] through [loại nội dung hoặc cách tiếp cận].”

For the illustrative project, a suitable sentence is: “SaibABC Blog helps beginners understand and carry out the basic steps on Blogger through practical guides, examples, and easy-to-use checklists.” This is a proposed direction, not evidence that the blog has been created.

Check readability and room for expansion

  • Say the name aloud and ask someone else to write it down after hearing it.
  • Prefer a name that is short, easy to spell, and easy to type on a phone.
  • Avoid strings of numbers, hyphens, or spellings that could cause confusion.
  • Do not pack multiple keywords into the name; overly long names are usually difficult to remember.
  • Avoid tying the blog to a single topic if you reasonably expect to expand later.

The brand name and the address do not have to match exactly. You can use a short name and explain the topic through the description, title, and content. A name being technically available does not prove that you have the right to use every similar trademark or name.

Check before registering

  1. Check whether the name is available for registration with the provider you plan to use.
  2. Search for similar spellings to see whether they could be confused with another brand, organization, or website.
  3. Check whether the name contains a telephone number, address, or personal information that does not need to be public.
  4. If you choose a country-code extension, read the registration requirements that apply to it.
  5. Save at least three backup options and record why you rejected or kept each one.

A website name should be distinctive, accurately reflect the brand, and avoid misleading people; these are clarity criteria, not a formula that guarantees search rankings (according to Google Search Central).

How to calculate the full cost of a domain name

Do not look only at the first-year price. Use this formula:

Total estimate = initial registration fee + renewal fees for subsequent years + applicable taxes/fees + redemption fees or optional services, if any.

When comparing options, record four separate lines: the registration price, the renewal price, the post-expiration redemption price, and any mandatory services. If you pay in a foreign currency, the actual budget will also depend on the payment method and the payment provider’s exchange-rate conversion.

Sample estimate for a .com domain

The pricing data supplied for this article records a rate of USD 14.98 for the first year and USD 18.48 for each renewal year for a .com domain at Namecheap on 22/09/2026. This is only a reference point and should be checked again on the checkout page when you buy; do not use promotional pricing to set a long-term budget (according to namecheap.com).

Illustrative scenarioCalculationPre-tax total
First year at the stated rateUSD 14.98USD 14.98
Three years, excluding promotions14.98 + 18.48 + 18.48USD 51.94
Three years, assuming the first year is USD 11.2811.28 + 18.48 + 18.48USD 48.24

This is not a universal price list for every country, domain extension, or registrar. Taxes, transfer fees, promotional conditions, privacy-protection services, and recovery fees may change the final amount. Registration rights also last only for the paid term; they do not provide perpetual use (according to icann.org).

Managing your account, DNS, HTTPS, and renewal

Managing your account, DNS, HTTPS, and renewal

Before paying, make sure the registrar account uses an email address you will control long term, a unique password, and an additional authentication method if the provider supports one. Record the expiration date, expected renewal price, payment method, and account-recovery procedure. Do not buy a domain through someone else’s account if you will need to manage it yourself later.

DNS is the Domain Name System: it directs a domain to the appropriate service. When connecting a domain to Blogger, use the exact records that Blogger requests at the time of configuration. Do not delete records serving email, another website, or a verification service unless you understand the impact. Expiration can make the blog inaccessible, incur recovery fees, or allow the name to be released to someone else; the registrant remains responsible for monitoring it (according to icann.org).

After configuration, check the setup in a private window or a browser where you are not signed in: open the domain with www, the root domain if you have enabled redirection, one post, and one Page if the blog has those destinations. Check that the address uses HTTPS and that the browser shows no certificate warning. If the domain has a CAA record, compare it with the requirement to allow letsencrypt.org according to Blogger’s HTTPS instructions; do not add a record simply because you found an example on the Internet (according to support.google.com).

If you have not purchased a domain, you do not yet have separate DNS or HTTPS to check. Mark this step as not applicable, and do not enter expected results as though the connection had succeeded.

Pre-payment checklist

  1. State the purpose clearly: experimentation, a personal blog, brand building, or a long-term project.
  2. Prepare at least three name options and check how they are pronounced and spelled.
  3. Check for possible confusion with another brand, organization, or website.
  4. Compare the registration price, renewal price, taxes, recovery fees, and required services.
  5. Read the conditions for the domain extension, especially country-code extensions or extensions with restrictions.
  6. Check the account name, email address, password, and recovery method.
  7. Check the expiration date, the automatic-renewal policy, and how to disable the feature.
  8. Review the cart carefully, remove unnecessary add-ons, and confirm the final total.
  9. Record the registrar, domain, registration date, expiration date, and expected renewal price.
  10. If you connect Blogger later, record the current DNS records before making changes, and do not use SaibABC.Com as a practice domain.

Decision exercise

Fill in the table below with your information. Text in square brackets indicates fields to complete, not verified results.

QuestionAnswer
Who is the blog for?[Nhóm người đọc]
What will the blog help them do?[Kết quả cụ thể]
Three proposed names[Tên 1]; [Tên 2]; [Tên 3]
Can a Blogspot address be used temporarily?[Có/Không và lý do]
Expected registration fee[Số tiền và đơn vị tiền tệ]
Annual renewal fee[Số tiền và đơn vị tiền tệ]
Who will manage the email, account, and renewal date?[Tên hoặc vai trò]
Chosen option[Blogspot/Tên miền riêng]

The exercise is complete when you can explain why you chose that option, the projected total cost over at least three years, which name is your primary choice, and who is responsible for protecting the account, managing DNS, and monitoring the renewal date.

Next steps and how to go back if you change your mind

If you have not paid, you can stop at the checklist, continue writing at your Blogspot address, and review the decision later. If you have already purchased the domain but have not connected it, do not delete or change DNS on your own; first read the provider’s cancellation, transfer, and renewal policies. If the configuration causes an error, record the current state, compare the records with those from before the change, and roll back according to the provider’s documentation. Do not delete the domain or email records simply to start over.

If you already have a practice domain, you can move on to the guide for connecting a domain to Blogger and checking the destination address:

Connect a Custom Domain to Blogger and Verify HTTPS Correctly

If you have not purchased one, you can still continue with the project content. SaibABC.Com is the WordPress website publishing the series, while SaibABC Blog is the illustrative Blogger project; do not use SaibABC.Com’s domain or DNS as the practice domain.
